Somali Relief and Development Society (SORDES) is a non-political, not-for-profit, and non- religious Somalia NGO, was established in Bardera, Gedo region in June 2006 by a group of concerned Somali intellectuals to respond to increased suffering, starvation and death of the communities badly affected by the civil conflict and famine in Somalia through the establishmentof community-based rehabilitation and development projects.

The organization has mainly focusedon Health, Nutrition, Agriculture/livestock, education, Peace promotion, women empowerment, Improvements on environmental, making awareness against the dangerous diseases such as: HIV/AIDS, child right protection as well as responding emergencies.

SORDES has built its reputation at grassroots level as a visionary organization capable of working with communities mutually to alter the current course of conflicts and disempowerment at communal and individual levelin the region. The organization has also attainedrecognition as an organization capable of delivering services to the poor communities through collaboration and information-sharing with community grassroots as well Diasporas efforts and agencies working in the same regions with similar objectives.

The main aim formation of the organization by the gatheredintellectual was at first to target the restoration of peace in the country as well as theregion as the most key factor which contribute to accelerate excessive poverty and un-development which lead the grass-root level people to act nothing but idling. The fact remain that it is extremely difficult to carry out meaningful and fruitful development work for the poor and needy community under situation of conflict.
